A. FACULTY OF ARTS REQUIREMENTS

B. EXIGENCES POUR LE BACCALAUR脡AT EN FRAN脟AIS/MAJOR-FIELD REQUIREMENTS

La Division d'茅tudes fran莽aises et francophones (脡cole de langues, linguistique, litt茅ratures et cultures, Universit茅 de Calgary offre un programme d'茅tude complet de la langue et des litt茅rature de langue fran莽aises. Ce programme, de nature multidisciplinaire, est enti猫rement enseign茅 en fran莽ais. Le programme de Baccalaur茅at (BA) est con莽u pour d茅velopper les aptitudes linguistiques de l'茅tudiant jusqu'脿 un niveau tr猫s 茅lev茅. L'茅tudiant au BA apprendra la structure de la langue fran莽aise, d茅couvrira ses variations, et gagnera, ce faisant, un vaste fond de connaissances litt茅raires et culturelles dont le contenu traversera les si猫cles (du Moyen 脗ge 脿 aujourd'hui), les cultures (la France, le Canada et toute la francophonie) et les m茅dia (le cin茅ma notamment). Le Baccalaur茅at sp茅cialis茅 (BA Honours) permet 脿 l'茅tudiant d'approfondir ses connaissances linguistiques et culturelles tout en le pr茅parant ad茅quatement pour les 茅tudes sup茅rieures, que ce soit en litt茅rature, ou en linguistique. Enfin, le Baccalaur茅at conjoint en Fran莽ais et en 脡ducation (BA/BEd) pr茅pare les 茅tudiants 脿 enseigner le fran莽ais dans les r茅seaux d'enseignement primaires et secondaires tandis que conjoints (surtout en fran莽ais/espagnol) int茅resseront particuli猫rement les 茅tudiants qui souhaitent jumeler leurs comp茅tences en fran莽ais avec un autre programme.

Exigences: La concentration en fran莽ais comprend un minimum de 48 unit茅s (42 unit茅s dans les cas de double sp茅cialisation fran莽ais/espagnol) et un maximum de 60 unit茅s (脿 puiser dans les cours faisant partie du champ d'茅tudes du fran莽ais), dont les suivantes:

1. Niveau 200: 9 unit茅s French 213, 225 et 227.

2. Niveau 300: 15 unit茅s

a. 12 unit茅s fournies par les cours French 329, 339, 353, 369;

b. en outre 3 unit茅s* 脿 puiser dans les cours faisant partie du champ d'茅tudes du fran莽ais**

3. Niveau 400: 15 unit茅s* 脿 puiser dans les cours faisant partie du champ d'茅tudes du fran莽ais**

*Dans les cas de double sp茅cialisation fran莽ais/espagnol, seules 12 unit茅s sont exig茅es au niveau 400

4. Niveau 500: 9 unit茅s* 脿 puiser dans les cours faisant partie du champ d'茅tudes du fran莽ais**

*Dans les cas de double sp茅cialisation fran莽ais/espagnol, seules 6 unit茅s sont exig茅es au niveau 500

**Seules 3 unit茅s provenant des cours Language ou Romance Studies seront compt茅es vers la concentration en fran莽ais.

Remarques:

  • Les 茅tudiants qui sont plac茅s dans la s茅rie des cours de langue 脿 un niveau sup茅rieur au cours French 213 doivent remplacer les cours dont ils sont dispens茅s par d'autres cours portant l'茅tiquette French (FREN) de niveau 300 (ou plus haut).
  • L'脡cole de langues, linguistique, litt茅ratures et cultures recommande aux 茅tudiants dont le fran莽ais est la langue seconde de choisir French 489.01 (Phonologie).
  • L'脡cole de langues, linguistique, litt茅ratures et cultures recommande aux 茅tudiants d'inclure parmi leurs options des cours FLIP (French Language Instruction Program) enseign茅s en fran莽ais dans d'autres d茅partements. Un cours FLIP (French Language Instruction Program) peut compter pour 3 unit茅s.

The Division of French and Francophone Studies in of the School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary instruction in French language, linguistics and literature, using the target language. The BA program is designed to help students learn and achieve proficiency in French, understand its structure and variations, and gain a broad knowledge of French and Francophone literatures, by studying texts from different centuries, different countries, as well as by studying French-language films. The BA Honours deepens the foundation in French studies and provides excellent preparation for graduate studies in literatures or linguistics. The BA/BEd, and the double-major (and especially in French/Spanish), are of particular value to students seeking to combine French with another program.

Major-Field Requirements: Students must successfully complete a minimum of 48 units (42 units in the case of French/Spanish double majors) to a maximum of 60 units in Courses Constituting the Field of French while fulfilling the following requirements:

1. 200-Level Courses: 9 units French 213, 225 and 227.

2. 300-Level Courses: 15 units

  1. 12 units French 329, 339, 353, 369;
  2. 3 additional units in Courses Constituting the Field of French**

3. 400-Level Courses: 15 units in Courses Constituting the Field of French**

*In the case of French/Spanish double majors, only 12 units are required at the 400 level.

4. 500-Level Courses: 9 units in Courses Constituting the Field of French**

*In the case of French/Spanish double majors, only 6 units are required at the 500 level.
**Only 3 units from courses labelled Language or Romance Studies may be counted towards the major field requirements.

Notes:

  • Students who place higher than French 213 in the language-course sequence must replace those language courses by other senior-level courses labelled French (FREN).
  • The School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures recommends that non-francophone students choose French 489.01 (Phonology) as the required course at the 400 level.
  • The School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures recommends that students include among their options FLIP (French Language Instruction Program) courses taught in French in other departments. Three units FLIP (French Language Instruction Program) may be counted toward the French Major.
