A.听FACULTY OF ARTS REQUIREMENTS
Students must adhere to the applicable Faculty of Arts requirements in 3.4 Graduation.
B.听MAJOR-FIELD REQUIREMENTS
听
Students majoring in East Asian Language Studies choose either Chinese or Japanese as the primary language of study and the other as their secondary language of study.
Students must successfully complete a minimum of 8.5 and a maximum of 10.0 full-course equivalents in the Field of East Asian Language Studies while fulfilling the following requirements:
1.听Primary Language of Study: 4.0 full-course equivalents from the list of either 鈥淐hinese Language鈥 or 鈥淛apanese Language鈥 courses, whichever is the primary language of study. (See the description under Major Field in East Asian Language Studies).
2.听Secondary Language of Study: 2.0 full-course equivalents from the list of either 鈥淛apanese Language鈥 or 鈥淐hinese Language鈥 courses, whichever is the secondary language of study. (This will be the language not chosen for Requirement 1 above.)
3.听Primary Culture of Study: 1.0 full-course equivalents from the list of either 鈥淐hinese Culture鈥 or 鈥淛apanese Culture鈥 courses, whichever corresponds to the primary language of study.
4.听Secondary Culture of Study: 0.5 full-course equivalents from the list of either 鈥淛apanese Culture鈥 or 鈥淐hinese Culture鈥 courses, whichever corresponds to the secondary language of study.
5.听East Asia Courses: 0.5 full-course equivalents from the list of 鈥淕eneral Courses on East Asia.鈥
6.听Capstone: East Asian Language Studies 501.
C.听DEGREE OPTIONS
The BA in East Asian Language Studies can be taken with Cooperative Education. See section 3.4.5 Co-operative Education Programs for information and requirements.
Notes:
- Students may take up to 1.0 full-course equivalent from the list of "Courses on East Asian Cultures" as part of the language requirement in the language in which they received advanced placement.听
- Students who have received advanced placement in the second language may take up to 1.0 FCE in the first language in place of 1.0 FCE in the second language.听
- In the final year, students take East Asian Language Studies 501: Topics in East Asian Language Studies. This course allows students to synthesize their training in East Asian languages and cultures and bring it to bear on a particular issue in the two languages, and/or the relation between the languages and the cultures.
