4.29.1 BA in Geography

A.聽FACULTY OF ARTS REQUIREMENTS

Students must adhere to the applicable Faculty of Arts requirements in 3.4 Graduation.

B.聽MAJOR-FIELD REQUIREMENTS

Students must successfully complete a minimum of 8.0 and a maximum of 10.0 full-course equivalents in the Field of Geography while fulfilling the following requirements:

1.听Introduction: Geography 211, 231, and one of 251 or 253

2.听Physical Geography: 1.0 full-course equivalent from: Geography 305, 307 and 313.

3.聽Human Geography: 1.5 full-course equivalents from: Geography 321, 341, 351, 361, 365 and 367.

4.听Analytic Methods: Geography 339.

5.听Field Studies: Geography 391.

6.听Regional Geography and/or Overseas Field Studies: 1.0 full-course equivalent from: Geography 371, 377, 381, 392, 393, 394, 395, and 397. Geography 381 is strongly recommended.

7.听Upper-Level Courses: 2.0 full-course equivalents in Geography at the 400 or 500 level, including at least 1 full-course equivalent selected from 鈥淗uman Geography鈥 (List A). The聽remaining courses should preferably be聽selected from "Human Geography" (List A) or 鈥淥ther Geography Courses鈥 (List C). (See the Field of Geography.)

8.听Human Geography Emphasis: At least 6.0 full-course equivalents (inclusive of all courses used to fulfill requirements 1-7 above) from 鈥淗uman Geography鈥 (List A) and 鈥淥ther Geography Courses鈥 (List C).

C.聽OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Technical Writing: 0.5 full-course equivalent from: Communications Studies 361, 363, 369 and Science 311.

D.聽DEGREE OPTIONS

The BA in Geography can be taken with Cooperative Education. See section 3.4.5 Co-operative Education Programs for information and requirements.

Notes:

  • Students should consult with the Geography Undergraduate Coordinator or advisors concerning their selection of 400- and 500-level courses.
  • In meeting Requirement 7 pertaining to 鈥淯pper-Level Courses,鈥 students should take 2.0 full-course equivalents from Lists A and C if they do not wish to take extra courses in the Field of Geography, beyond the 8.0 full-course equivalent minimum, to meet Requirement 8.
  • It is strongly recommended that students take Geography 391 at the beginning of the second year.
  • Geography 592 may be accepted in partial fulfillment, i.e. in lieu of one half-course equivalent, of the 鈥淩egional Geography and Overseas Field Studies鈥 requirement.
  • Geography 381 is strongly recommended.
  • Students planning to pursue graduate studies in Geography are advised to take Geography 439.
  • Students are advised to register in 300-level courses in their second year, and proceed to 400 and 500-level courses in their third and fourth years.
