4.29.4 BSc Honours Geography

A.听FACULTY OF ARTS REQUIREMENTS

Students must adhere to the applicable Faculty of Arts requirements in 3.4 Graduation.

B.听MAJOR-FIELD WITH HONOURS REQUIREMENTS

Students must successfully complete a minimum of 10.0 and a maximum of 12.0 full-course equivalents in the Field of Geography while fulfilling the following requirements:

1.听Introduction: Geography 211, 231, and one of 251 or 253

2.听Physical Geography: 1.0 full-course equivalent from: Geography 305, 307 and 313.

3.听Human Geography: 1.0 full-course equivalents from: Geography 321, 341, 351, 361, 365 and 367.

4.听Analytic Methods: Geography 339 and 0.5 full-course equivalents from: Geography 333, 357, 437 or 439.

5.听Field Studies: Geography 391.

6.听Honours Paper: Geography 599.99.

7.听Regional Geography and/or Overseas Field Studies: 1.0 full-course equivalent from: Geography 371, 377, 381, 392, 393, 394, 395, and 397.

8.听Upper-Level Courses: An additional 2.0 full-course equivalents in Geography at the 400 or 500 level with at least 1.0 full-course equivalents selected from 鈥淧hysical Geography鈥� (List B) and 鈥淥ther Geography Courses鈥� (List C). (See the Field of Geography.)

9.听Geography Options: An additional 1.5 full-course equivalents from the Field of Geography with at least 0.5 full-course equivalents in 鈥淥ther Geography Courses鈥� (List C).

10.听Physical Geography Emphasis: At least 5.5 full-course equivalents (inclusive of all courses used to fulfill requirements 1-9 above) from 鈥淧hysical Geography鈥� (List B) and 鈥淥ther Geography Courses鈥� (List C).

C.听OTHER REQUIREMENTS

1.听Technical Writing Requirement: 0.5 full-course equivalent from: Communications Studies 361, 363, 369 and Science 311.

2.听Science Requirement: a total of 3.0 full-course equivalents from the following:

(a) 2.0 full-course equivalent from: Biology 231, 233; Chemistry 201 or 211, 203 or 213; Physics 211, 221, 223;听

(b) 1.0 full-course equivalent from: Computer Science 217, 219, 231; Mathematics 211 or 213; Mathematics 249 or 251 or 281 or Applied Mathematics 217; Mathematics 253 or 283.听

Any senior courses offered by the Faculty of Science and having one of these as a prerequisite may be substituted for a course in this list.

D.听DEGREE OPTIONS

The BSc Honours in Geography can be taken with Cooperative Education. See section 3.4.5 Co-operative Education Programs for information and requirements.

Notes:

  • Students should consult with the Geography Advisor or the Undergraduate Director concerning their selection of 400 and 500-level courses.
  • In meeting Requirement 7-9 pertaining to 鈥淯pper-Level Courses,鈥� 鈥淩egional Geography and Overseas Field Studies鈥� and 鈥淕eography Options,鈥� students should take 2.0 full-course equivalents from Lists B and C if they do not wish to take extra courses in the Field of Geography, beyond the 10.0 full-course equivalent minimum, to meet Requirement 10.
  • It is strongly recommended that students take Geography 391 at the beginning of the second year.
  • Geography 592 may be accepted in partial fulfillment, i.e. in lieu of one half-course equivalent, of the 鈥淩egional Geography and Overseas Field Studies鈥� requirement.
  • Geography 381 is strongly recommended.
  • Students planning to pursue graduate studies in Geography are advised to take Geography 439.
  • Students may need additional prerequisites to enrol in senior-level courses.
  • Some of these courses have particular requirements for high school courses in addition to those required for entry into the Faculty of Arts. Please consult the course listings in this Calendar.
